"The First 3" episode 1 GUS VAN SANT

In this episode I will be outlining the early period of Gus Van Sants greater body of work. His early trilogy if you will. "The First 3".
Mala Noche (1985), Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My own Private Idaho (1991).
Mala noche (Bad Night),his first effort in directing began in his black and white, nearly unwatchable but extremely insightful first work. Dealing with the seediness and desolate existence of Walt; a gay boy working at a convenience store in Portland Oregon who has a thing for a hot mexican man, (johnny) who doesn't speak english and plays hard to get.

The yarn follows them along dubious dark alleys and side streets in the hope that Walt will soon score with johnny. In desperation, even offering to pay for the deed. Walt decides to take Johnny's friend instead out of frustration for a night.

The story unfolds as Walt and his sister plot to have them (johnny and his friend) over for dinner; to go on adventures around town and into the rural landscape (a theme revisited in my own private idaho), & hanging out at the convenience store just hamming it up.
I'd have to say this is definitely worth a watch, even if it's just to see the rise of a great director. This is only the beginning of his "first 3"; Before Hollywood takes over with Good Will Hunting.

A film By Rebecca Zlowtowski Staring Lea Seydoux And Tahar Rahim. They Used the song "Ghost Tracks" for the Trailer! 7 Songs in total are in this movie. Including some from the next album Abandoned Apartments out Sept 17th in Europe via Modulor and Nov 12th via K in the Usa. I worked on the music for months and ended up going to paris and showing rebecca and rob 25 songs at Robs Studio in the 18th. We recorded Ghost tracks with a full band at the old Vogue Studios. All the others were recorded at my studio in London. Love you rebecca....

While today’s voice recognition and response systems are much more evolved and useful than the one on this Datsun 810 Maxima, digital nannies of yesteryear were novelties that were more annoying than helpful.

Picture yourself back in 1982: You are taking your new high-tech Datsun 810 Maxima for a nighttime drive in the country. A Flock of Seagulls’ “I Ran” is playing on the radio. You are all alone in the cockpit — or so you think. When you come to a stop and turn off the ignition, a sultry female voice emanates from behind the dash: “Lights are on.” And so they are. You turn them off and say, “Thanks, baby.”

With a vocabulary of exactly six phrases, the 810 Maxima was the first true talking car, equipped with a digital nanny feature that would chastise you for forgetful behaviors, including not switching off your headlights or failing to buckle your seat belt. And like any true fad, the recordings that were etched into its phonograph-style cylinder swiftly went from way-cool tech to way annoying. But that didn’t stop the insufferable feature from finding its way into other vehicles such as the 1984 Dodge Daytona and Chrysler Laser.

And despite eventually becoming an ’80s punch line, cars that talk have once again resurfaced in the form of voice-prompt GPS navigation systems and Sync-style voice control systems. It seems that this time, however, they have something relevant to say.

Dorothy's one of my favorite interior designers...I wish she could come over and
design my appartment. But then i'd probably have to hire a gardener just for the inside plants. I don't mind. I'll just have to work a little harder. I would request jasmine though, i love the smell of jasmine flowers. It always makes me feel like i'm in a garden. I love that feeling. I want that for my appartment. Ok, I'm determined.

OFF TO AUSTRALIA

I'm off to Australia in a few days. I fly out of LAX Wednesday Night. It's a 17 hour flight....wow. I want to go to the book store before i leave. I'll make sure to have every Jacqueline Susann book with me. I read somewhere that she said "I don't think any novelist should be concerned with literature" , it's interesting only because her books are one of the most readable / realistic portrayals of life in New York City's entertainment circles of the 40's, 50's and 60's; with an extremely interesting insight. I've read her books one or 2 times each. I have yet to read (every night, josephine, yargo, & delores) which i'll go find for my trip to Aussie-land....

ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE PLACES IN THE WORLD

I love the Lux Gardens so much. I'd have to say it is one of if not my most favorite place in the world. I feel so good there. There's also a place there that serves hot chocolate thats been there since the 40's or 50's...

I think ever since i was really little i was facinated by time travel. I have often
been in other times in my dreams. And sometimes those mixed with Flying dreams.
I think that time is the most interesting thing. What Time is it?
